Google Experiments with Merging AI Overviews and AI Mode:

With competitive pressure rising — especially after OpenAI’s recent advancements — Google has begun testing a new Search feature that unifies its AI Overviews with the conversational AI Mode. Currently, users often see an AI-generated summary at the top of their search results. With this experiment, they can immediately dive deeper into the topic through a conversational follow-up experience powered by Google’s Gemini AI.

AI Mode, which rolled out to U.S. users in May and expanded globally in August, allows people to interact with Gemini in a chat-style interface similar to ChatGPT. Until now, accessing AI Mode required deciding in advance whether your question needed a simple search result or a more detailed, interactive exploration. To start a conversation, users had to manually switch to the AI Mode tab.

Google is now testing whether that separation is necessary. Information searches often evolve — what begins as a straightforward question can spark deeper curiosity. By blending AI Overviews with AI Mode, Google aims to create a seamless transition from a quick answer to an in-depth conversational experience, without making the user choose beforehand.
